One player creates a room by picking a category (17 options, including "All Categories"), a difficulty (Mixed, Easy, Medium, or Hard), how many questions to play (5, 10, 15, 20, or 30), and how many seconds each question stays open (5 to 30, in 5-second steps). That generates a 4-letter room code — everyone else just types it in on the Trivia Blitz landing screen to join, no account or app download needed.
There's no minimum or maximum player count. You can run a round solo to warm up, or pack a room with a dozen people — every player is scored independently, so group size never changes how the game works.
Every question is shown to all players at the same moment, with the countdown you set at creation. If the question has multiple-choice options, you tap one; otherwise you type your answer. You get exactly one attempt per question — there's no changing your mind after you submit.
Once the timer runs out (or everyone's answered), the correct answer reveals and the host taps through to the next question. Questions come from two free public trivia databases (Open Trivia DB and The Trivia API) pulled fresh for each room, so the pool is large and a repeat is unlikely even across several games in a row.
This is the part most people get wrong assuming it's just "right answer = 1 point." Speed matters: answer correctly in the first third of the time window and you get 10 points; the middle third is worth 7; the final third is worth 5. Get it wrong at any point and you score 0 for that question.
Two bonuses stack on top of that. Whoever answers correctly first (regardless of which third of the timer it lands in) gets a flat +3 bonus. And every third correct answer in a row — your 3rd, 6th, 9th, and so on — doubles that question's total points. A wrong answer resets the streak counter to zero, so a single miss can cost you more than just that one question.
